A West Lothian man will paddle 10 lochs end-to-end – totalling 150km – in just six days to raise funds for social enterprise, The Larder.
Adam Underwood set himself the challenge, hoping to raise £5000 to support the group’s food insecurity project, Catalyst Kitchen, which aims to feed hungry people amid the cost of living crisis.
As costs rise across following two years of public health restrictions, the hunger crisis that was already reaching boiling point before the pandemic has become much worse, meaning The Larder’s services are needed more than ever.
As the employer engagement officer of The Larder, Adam is acutely aware of the struggles people are going through and, with a love of paddle boarding, has risen to this challenge.
He said: “This is a daunting proposition and I’m feeling excited and apprehensive as it will be a huge physical challenge, but it’s the least I can do to help support such a project and organisation.
“From this challenge, I’m hoping that it will not only raise £5000 for the project, but help kickstart the conversation around how we as a society can support those in need in a dignified and compassionate way.” Since the pandemic began, The Larder’s Catalyst Kitchen has supported 979 food insecure individuals, delivering and serving 133,572 meals.
The fundraiser sets out not only to raise money, but to spread awareness of the increasing issue of food insecurity in West Lothian and the difficulties faced by significant numbers of people accessing regular, good quality food.
