Kate Hudson has confirmed that she will release her debut album next year.
The award-winning actor announced the news on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday. “I just feel weird saying it,” she said. “I’ve been making a record.”
Explaining her decision to release the album, the 43-year-old said: “You know, I had this thing [during] Covid... Every time you’re doing interviews, people are like, ‘Do you have any regrets?’ I go, ‘I’m early 40s... not yet.’ But during Covid, I was like, ‘You know, what am I doing?”
She said that she had been writing music since she was 19 and added: “I just thought that would be one of my great regrets. I have no expectations... I just want to put a record out, and so I’m doing it. And I’m really proud of it. I can’t wait.”
In April, the actor first announced that she was making an album by releasing two pictures on Instagram. Alongside them, she wrote: “Finally realized it’s time to say f#%! it and saaaannngg!!!!! #albumincoming.”
Although this is the actor’s first public foray into releasing music, Hudson grew up surrounded by music: She is the daughter of comedian Goldie Hawn and singer Bill Hudson, who performed for two decades as part of The Hudson Brothers, alongside his siblings Brett and Mark.
She has also spent her adult life surrounded by musicians: her first husband was the Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson and she shares a son with Muse frontman Matt Bellamy. She is currently engaged to musician Danny Fujikawa.
Hudson fans will also remember that the actor has sung several times on screen, both in acting roles (such as in 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, where she sang You’re So Vain with Matthew McConaughey and in 2009’s Nine where she performed Cinema Italiano) and as herself (she covered Ariana Grande’s 7 rings on the Jimmy Fallon-hosted NBC game show That’s My Jam in January).
She also played a dance instructor in Glee between 2012 to 2013 and performed in singer Sia’s directorial debut, the 2021 film, Music. The film was criticised for casting Maddie Ziegler, a non-autistic actor, as an autistic character, but Hudson was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the film.
In response to the backlash Hudson, speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, said: “For me, when I hear that there’s anybody that feels left out, I feel terrible... I think when people see the film they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that was put into it, but it is an important conversation to have – not just about this movie, but as a whole about representation.”
Hudson started her film career in 1998 when she was just 19 years old, starring in Desert Blue alongside Christina Ricci and Casey Affleck. She went on to star in some of the late Nineties and early Noughties’ most beloved romcoms, including Almost Famous, About Adam and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
This year Hudson has played fashion designer Birdie Jay in the Knives Out sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and will have a role in the upcoming Michael Maren-written comedy film, Shriver.
