Accused in Anjali murder case nabbed in Davangere by Railway police

Girish Sawanth, accused in the murder of Anjali Ambiger, was nabbed in Davangere after he attempted to jump off a moving train following a scuffle with fellow passengers.

The Railway police did not initially recognise him, but he was identified by one of its officers as the accused in the murder case. The Hubballi-Dharwad police were then alerted. Subsequently a team from Hubballi took custody of the accused, who has suffered injuries while he tried to escape, and brought him to the city. He is being treated at KIMS Hospital here.

Escape plan

Speaking to presspersons in Hubballi, Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar said that the accused had planned to escape to either Goa or Mumbai and that the arrest was made with the help of Railway police.

She said the accused was not in a condition to make any statement at the moment. The Police Commissioner said the accused had four cases of bike theft against him and had been arrested before.

Twenty-year-old Anjali was stabbed to death on May 15 at her house in Veerapur Oni by Girish, who was reportedly enraged because she had spurned his marriage proposal. This incident happened just after another girl Neha Hiremath’s murder in the district.

BJP’s campaign

In another development, the BJP has blamed the drug menace in Hubballi-Dharwad as the reason for the killing of Neha Hiremath and Anjali.

Mahesh Tenginakai, MLA, has announced the launch of a special campaign against drug abuse from June in the twin cities.

Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who met the victim’s family, termed the incident a result of failure of law and order. President of Anjuman-E-Islam A.M. Hindasgeri and others too visited the victim’s family on Friday.
