"Bloody hell, what they expecting?'....A bar's strict dress code is raising eyebrows in Stockport

A bar in Stockport has introduced a strict new dress code and it's sparked quite the debate on social media. Bask in Stockport town centre will be launching a smart casual dress code on Fridays and Saturdays and has issued an update to its house rules for those days.

The speakeasy-style bar and music venue was launched by music promoter Benji Taylor and DJ Gareth Brooks in June. Overlooking Stockport train station, it has positioned itself as the go-to destination in the town for live music, comedy and great drinks.

Taking to social media to announce the news, the owners said that from 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays the bar would be running a smart casual dress code. It stipulates that for those weekend nights, the owners won't be admitting anyone with trackies, hoodies, caps, sportswear, or manbags.

Responding to the news on social media, some took the chance to tease the owners about the strict new dress code. Tagging both Benji and Gareth, one said: "Iv got a hat glued to my head pal", while another said, "County fans out at 7pm on the dot then."

Some went further to say the bar's owners were "generalising" and that they should "relocate" if they've got such "high expectations" for Stockport. One user on Facebook said: "I can understand not having hoods up indoors but why not hoodies they do know it's becoming really cold right? No man bags? But girls are allowed to have handbags though yeah? I can see a debate happening here...."

The manbag issue reigned supreme, with many on social media not seeing the problem with the small satchel or purse, which is typically worn across the chest. Others pondered what exactly they should wear to the Stockport bar, with one person writing: "Bloody hell what they expecting? Three piece suit and sequin dresses?"

As a self-professed fan of sneakers, owner Gareth Brooks, whose Twitter bio reads: "Yeah I got on sneaks but I need a new pair", was also mocked, with people suggesting that he could also be kicked out. One asked if he would be "Djing from the outside" on weekends, whilst another replied: "Manbags! That @mrgarethbrooks not getting in!"

While the owners clarified in the comments that trainers are allowed, one person wrote: "Absolutely ridiculous....I'm about to go to the theatre and I'm wearing trainers!"

However, many agreed with the move, with one user on Twitter writing: "Manbags should be a barring offence full stop", and other said, "same with hoodies seems very early 200s Didsbury". Over on Facebook, others joined in, adding: "At last! Lovely to have somewhere smart."

Another said the dress code was a "good choice", adding: "Trackies, hoodies and caps are for lazy people who don’t care about their appearance or their surroundings. It’s become Stockport’s uniform of choice and is simply a lack of class."

Bask isn't the first Manchester business to impose a strict dress code, earlier this year Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand's swanky city centre restaurant Rosso banned diners wearing shorts, despite temperatures sizzling temperatures. Back in July, diners took to TripAdvisor to complain after being turned away from the luxurious Spring Gardens eatery for wearing what they described as "smart shorts".
