He’s being linked with a place on Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, but Manchester United fans think Jaap Stam could still do a job for them in their current defence.
The Dutchman was back in action at Old Trafford on Saturday as he starred in the Legends of the North game for United against their old rivals Liverpool. A number of familiar faces joined him back at the Theatre of Dreams, including Gary Neville, Patrice Evra and Dimitar Berbatov.
Stam though left a lot of United fans impressed with his performance as lined up back in the heart of the defence. Although the hosts went on to lose the game 3-1, Stam’s display saw him earn top marks from the Manchester Evening News alongside goalscorer Berbatov.
The 49-year-old was given a rousing reception when he made his way from the pitch having played 75 minutes. And it’s clear from the reaction on social media that fans still fancy him to hold his own in the current United side.
The Reds have of course struggled in defence throughout what has been a dismal season. They would certainly benefit from having Stam in his prime back in the side.
While they won’t be seeing Stam back in the defence anytime soon, United fans could still see the former Netherlands international at Old Trafford again next season. The former defender has been linked with an appointment on Ten Hag’s coaching staff, with the incoming manager set to finalise more of his plans for next season in the coming weeks.
