'Absolute nonsense' - Robbie Fowler dismisses accusation over Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool

Kop idol Robbie Fowler believes that Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side could be the best team the club has ever had in its illustrious history, even though it has so far only won four trophies.

The Toxteth-born striker, whose 183 goals in two spells for the Reds saw him nicknamed by fans 'God', has previously said that the current crop are one of the greatest sides Anfield has ever witnessed.

But now Fowler has gone one further by proclaiming in his column for the Daily Mirror that Klopp is presiding over THE best Reds team of all time.

Explaining his rationale, Fowler said : "You can dispute (it), because of the achievements of that incredible team of the early to mid-1980s.

"But what I don’t think I can accept any more is this suggestion that the current Liverpool team can’t be deemed ‘greats’ – whatever that means – because they have won only four trophies. Absolute nonsense."

Fowler points out that since arriving at Chelsea little more than 12 months ago, Thomas Tuchel has already reached five major finals.

He believes that in any other era that would make Tuchel a Stamford Bridge legend, but instead the former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss is under pressure with Chelsea only third in the Premier League.

But unlike Tuchel and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Klopp has achieved his success without the backing of benefactors, which Fowler believes makes all the difference.

*RATE THE LIVERPOOL PLAYERS FOR THE WIN OVER BURNLEY:

In his column, Fowler makes a strong case for Klopp having built the strongest Liverpool squad the club has ever seen.

He said: "I’d argue that it’s the strongest-ever Liverpool squad because back in the 80s and earlier, the first 14 or 15 players played virtually all the games.

"But they’re a distance behind in today’s Premier League. Is that because they’re not a great team? No chance.

"If this is one of the greatest Liverpool sides of all time, then there is absolutely no question it’s the best team Manchester City have ever had.

"There’s even a case to be made they have a better squad than any club anywhere in the history of football."

Despite City's obvious riches and frighteningly consistent good form, Fowler believes Liverpool still have a chance of catching them and nicking the Premier League title, albeit a slim one.

He added: "A Klopp team of this quality can win all their remaining games – and that would make it interesting.

"I’m not saying it will happen, because injuries and illness have damaged their season. They’ve drawn too often and I put that down to game management. Maybe they’ve not been able to see things through at times.

"But it’s a minor gripe. I wouldn’t argue Liverpool should change their mentality when they’re leading.

"They simply have to believe they’re among the best ever. The only thing that can affect City and their other rivals is if they keep winning.

"It’s a tall order – but it’s not beyond the realms of possibility."
