At the end of every day, with all of its psychiatric beds full, Atrium Health still has about 50 patients waiting in its emergency rooms for mental health care. "Right now, at the end of every day, with all of our beds full, we still have about 50 patients waiting in our emergency rooms," Lisa McCanna, Atrium's vice president of the behavioral health service line, told North Carolina Health News.
The figure came as Atrium announced a $340 million, five-year investment in mental health care that includes a new behavioral health hospital in Charlotte's University City area. The hospital is expected to open in 2028.
