Abhishek Sharma Likely to Miss India’s Second World Cup Game Against Namibia Due to Illness

“He went to the hospital for examination and was discharged today. We have one more day to take the call,” India batter Tilak Varma said on Wednesday, providing an update on Sharma’s health.

In Abhishek’s absence, Sanju Samson could be considered to open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan.

According to sources, the issue began on February 6 after a net session at Wankhede Stadium, when Sharma ate something in Mumbai that upset his stomach. Despite his condition worsening on matchday, he chose to play against the USA. His stay at the crease lasted only one ball, and he did not appear in the dugout or join the post-match handshake following India’s 29-run victory.

Sharma’s stomach infection worsened, resulting in a high fever. He travelled with the team to New Delhi, where his condition deteriorated further. The Indian team’s recent matches in Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Mumbai exposed the players to hotter climates, and the sudden shift to Delhi’s chilly winter mornings and evenings further complicated his recovery.

After suffering drastic weight loss due to dehydration and fluid loss, Abhishek was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. He did not join the team for Wednesday’s training session.

“Abhi [Abhishek] still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he will be available for the game in two days’ time,” India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said at a press conference. “We’re waiting on Abhi’s fitness more than anything, and that will again open up a few different combinations,” he added.

Given the severity of his weight loss, the team management has decided not to risk Sharma’s inclusion in the Namibia fixture. It is also reported that Sharma has called his personal trainer to Delhi, who will assist him ahead of India’s marquee clash against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.
