Abandoned West Lothian nightclub could be turned into new nursing home

A former nightclub in Livingston is set to become a new care home if developer proposals are accepted by West Lothian Council.

Morrison Community Care has proposed turning West Lothian’s ‘Club Earth’ into a care service centre with private residential nursing and dementia care for up to 66 residents.

The site is located on Howden South Road in Almondside, and the club formerly closed its doors in 2017, and has remained vacant since. The new development seeks to “reinvigorate” the site.

“We hope that by addressing local demand for specialist care accommodation and through the creation of up to 150 jobs, the proposals are accepted by West Lothian Council which will allow us to proceed to a formal construction start in 2023,” said Paul Sokhi, Morrison Community Care’s managing director.

The proposed development, dubbed as ‘Almondside Luxury Suites’, would provide residents with private dining facilities, a cinema, a hairdressing salon, private en-suite bedrooms, and outdoor recreational space.

Nursing staff would be available 24/7 and employed as part of a locally-based recruitment drive that could see up to 150 jobs created across a wide variety of roles and disciplines.

“Morrison Community Care are delighted to have the opportunity to bring our sector-leading expertise to Livingston with Almondside Luxury Suites,” said Sokhi.

“Like many communities across Scotland, there is a shortfall of specialist accommodation that caters to the needs of the elderly but as a result of our collaboration with CCG and Holmes Miller, we are catering to this demand by delivering a sustained programme of developments as well as creating a standard of living (and service) that is meticulously designed to meet the needs of every resident.”

The proposal described the new development as a “contemporary styled building complemented by high-quality landscaped grounds.”

Morrison Community Care is an established premium care provider for the elderly in the UK, and MCC has a sustained development programme in Scotland working in partnership with the Glasgow-based contractor CCG (Scotland) and architects, Holmes Miller.

The partnership created more than 100 beds in 2021 and a further 68 are currently under construction in Fife.
