Abandoned since 1989, American buys Spanish village for $363,000 as he plans $7 million tourism revival with 44 homes, church, school and bar

An abandoned Spanish village that sat empty for decades has a new owner and an ambitious second life. Salto de Castro, in Zamora near the Spain-Portugal border, was purchased by American Jason Lee Beckwith for €310,000 ($363,000).

He now plans to transform the deserted settlement into a tourism and residential destination. The village had been abandoned since 1989, but its new owner sees an opportunity to revive the historic site rather than let it continue to deteriorate.
