An abandoned dog has been found with a heartbreaking note tucked into her collar.
Lilo was handed over to a shelter after being found wandering the streets with a heartbreaking note tucked into her collar.
Now a local community have been left overjoyed after a family were reconnected with their pooch they were forced to abandon after becoming homeless.
According to the note the dog had to be abandoned after her family became homeless but couldn't afford to keep the pet.
The note read: “Please keep my name. My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with two kids.
"She tried her best but can’t get help. I cost too much for her. She really loves me, and I’m a great dog and loved to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me."
Lilo was handed in to McKamey Animal Center (MAC) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, US, after being found by a concerned resident
In a widely shared post on Facebook, the shelter posted a picture of the note and said: "Lilo was found with the note pictured here attached to her collar.
"While we understand what and why Lilo’s mom did what she did, we wish that she had come to us first for resources and help.
"We’re here to help and we want to see people and their pets stay together, no matter the circumstance."
The touching note struck a chord with the community, many of whom offered to help the family keep the dog.
One commented underneath MAC's post: "Gosh I wish we knew who she is! Don’t know how old her two kids are, but you know they must also be sad about their dog suddenly being gone."
Another praised the shelter's response, saying: "This is one of the most compassionate things I have read."
In a happy turn of events, Lilo's owner was found and MAC are supporting the family to keep the dog.
In an update MAC said: "While we can't share a lot of the details with you yet, we are actively working with the family to set them up with a safe haven, shelter, and resources to stay together and tackle homelessness
"We are thankful for everyone who has advocated for the family, and shared our post.
"We are amazed at the outpouring of support. It truly takes a community, and you all have certainly shown us how powerful ours is - thank you so much."
People who had been following the story were overjoyed.
One wrote: "As someone who works with an unsheltered community, thank you. Thank you for not judging her initially and thank you for helping and just thank you.
"I will do anything I can to keep our unsheltered folks and their pets together."
Another commented: "This is so humbling and touching to see how many people are willing to help this mom, her children, and their best friend reunite together again."
