Aaron Rodgers expected to make decision on future by Tuesday afternoon

While the football world anxiously awaits Aaron Rodgers’ decision, Mike Silver of Bally Sports provided some extra information on the situation: Rodgers is currently in California to officiate David Bakhtiari’s wedding on Saturday, and he’s likely to let the Green Bay Packers know what he wants to do by Tuesday afternoon.

There’s a lot to unpack there.

Most importantly, a resolution to this situation is coming soon.

But a decision from Rodgers by Tuesday afternoon makes sense. The Packers have until then to use the franchise tag on receiver Davante Adams, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent later this month. The Packers say Adams’ situation is separate from what Rodgers decides to do, but it’s possible what the Packers do with Adams will dictate Rodgers’ next move.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Rodgers is still “torn” and going “back and forth” on what he wants to do next. He can return to the Packers, retire from football or request a trade, potentially to the Denver Broncos.

The team has a plan for every scenario.

The Packers have given Rodgers space to make a decision. He has said all along that a decision would come before free agency, and he often used the two-week franchise tag window as a realistic timeframe for deciding what he wants to do.

The new league year starts on March 16. The Packers still need to trim over $25 million in cap commitments before the start of the new league year. Using the franchise tag on Adams would add over $20 million to the tally, but Rodgers’ contract is one way for the Packers to create space.

It gets awfully tricky cap-wise if the Packers use the tag on Adams and Rodgers wants to be traded.

Thankfully, answers to all the questions are coming soon. In fact, it’s certainly possible the Packers and everyone else will know by early next week what Rodgers wants to do for the 2022 season.
