The New York Jets are still holding their breath as Aaron Rodgers ponders his next move, but should he agree to join the franchise they could potentially secure a deal for another former Green Bay Packers star.
Rodgers met with the Jets in person on Tuesday to discuss a potential trade deal, and with the Packers happy to do business with the franchise we are once again waiting on the quarterback to make up his mind. For the first time since 2005 the Packers are happy to part ways with Rodgers, and the Jets are ready and waiting to snap him up.
A decision is expected in the coming days, but that hasn't stopped the Jets from looking around elsewhere in the league as they look to add to their roster even further. The Jets are one of the teams linked with running-back Jamaal Williams, and he could reunite with Rodgers.
According to Go Long TD’s Tyler Dunne, the Jets are very interested in signing Williams - who is currently a free agent. Williams enjoyed a stunning season with the Detroit Lions, Williams led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns last year, and has some of the top teams in the league keeping tabs on him.
The Lions would love to have him back, and Williams is thought to be keen on a return. However, according to Dunne they face competition from the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills and the Jets.
Williams was drafted by the Packers back in 2017, but joined the Lions in 2021 as Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon moved ahead of him in the pecking order. Rodgers has remained a huge fan of Williams despite the running-back leaving the franchise, and should he move to the Jets there is potential that the pair could reunite.
Rodgers spoke about Williams back in January, claiming he was prepared to give him a big hug when the pair cross paths again. "I’m a hugger, so if I see Jamaal, I’m giving him a hug. I love Jamaal," Rodgers said.
"He’s one of my all-time favourites. He’s one of the happiest teammates we’ve ever had, one of the greatest guys in the locker room that I’ve been able to work with."
Perhaps Williams was in the know all along, as he predicted Rodgers to join the Jets at the start of February. "I just feel my boy’s going to go to the Jets," Williams said when discussing the future of Rodgers.
"I want to see Jordan Love get his time to shine and show us what he’s worth. So yeah. Let A-Rod go to the Jets, have fun, do his thing."
The Jets had a stacked offence last year, and it was only the quarterback position that let them down. But if they can convince Rodgers to join not only would it boost their postseason chances, it could turn Williams' head too.
