Aaron Rodgers breaks silence ahead of 'essentially done' trade to New York Jets

Aaron Rodgers has broken his silence on a potential trade to the New York Jets with a deal likely to be struck imminently.

The latest reports suggested a trade was 'essentially done' between the two teams, with the Green Bay Packers quarterback meeting with the Jets earlier this week to discuss a deal and the direction of the franchise, if he was to join.

With both teams now agreeing compensation, which could be as much as two first-round picks, the ball is now solely in Rodgers' court, with the 39-year-old having a no-trade clause in his contract with the Packers.

After speaking to the Jets on Monday and Tuesday, Rodgers headed back home to California where a quarterback camp was held. It featured a number of NFL star's including Josh Allen, Jared Goff and Sam Darnold in a celebrity flag football game held in Orange County.

Rodgers briefly spoke to former Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and when asked about a potential trade, he said: "Well, I think it won’t be long. There’s a time limit for all this. It’s always interesting meeting important figures in the sport. That’s all I’m giving you. Stay tuned."

If a move was to happen, it would almost certainly be before Wednesday, when the new season officially starts and free agency opens, with players allowed to sign with new teams.

Should the Jets not make the move official before then, they could miss out on a number of players in free agency, or be hampered by their ability to sign anyone due to the uncertainty regarding their cap situation.

A move to the Jets would be a huge power shift in the AFC, with the team immediately becoming huge contenders for the upcoming season.

The Jets have one of the better rosters in the NFL, but were let down by poor quarterback play last season. This has been the story of the franchise for some time, after failing with draft picks Darnold and Zach Wilson in recent years.

It would be the first time that Rodgers has played for another team after spending 18 seasons with the Packers.
