Aaron and Sam Taylor-Johnson's 'bohemian' bedroom flirts with this retro interiors trend

Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his director wife Sam Taylor-Johnson may be synonymous with Hollywood's hills – but they reside in pastures across the Atlantic, in Somerset, south-west England.

Given its location, we might be forgiven for thinking that much of the property follows quintessentially British country aesthetic; however, the couple's bedroom taps into a more bohemian design trend rooted in the 1970's.

In her post below, Sam is pictured with her dog on the floor of the bedroom, but in the backdrop, we noticed a glimpse of their rattan bed – complete with intricate wooden detail below the weaved material. The statement furnishing sits atop a gray-blue rug, and the dark wooden floor nods to the bedroom's overall rustic aesthetic.

It is perhaps no secret that rattan has topped trends in recent years; however, it shows no signs of falling out of favor. Feather & Black's bedroom expert Laura Burnett reveals that searches for '1970s interiors' have risen 78 percent on   Pinterest Trends in 2023 – and they continue to do so as we look towards fashionable fall decor. But how should we style such a piece?

French Bedroom's creative director Georgia Metcalfe, recommends softening the grandeur of the bed and leaning into 'rattan's bohemian charm' through our choice of soft furnishings and bedding.

'Contrasting rattans rustic design with a scattering of crisp linen cushions and quilted throws,' she says. 'Draw on the palettes and patterns of the natural world and add a hint of deep emerald hues and botanical prints reminiscent of flora and fauna from around the globe to create a room that feels just as relaxing as it does rejuvenating.'

And, while we inevitably love the look of the couple's rattan bed, there are other ways to incorporate this retro staple into our homes. We love 1stDibs' current collection of rattan furniture that comes in a variety of sizes to work in any sized space – because we don't need to replace our bed to tap into the look.

Whether we go big or inject subtle hints of rattan hints through lighting or a mirror, Laura recommends styling against 'muted oranges, rich greens, and warm browns' to evoke a sense of nostalgia. 'Combine these warm toasty elements with fringed curtains, cushions, or lampshades, and weave in touches of gold for unbridled 70s flair,' she says.
