AA issues important message to anybody filling up car with petrol in next two weeks

The price of a tank of petrol could drop by as much as a tenner within the next fortnight, according to predictions by the AA.

It could be good news for drivers who will be filling up their tanks in two weeks, as average pump prices are is now down to 188.76p a litre for petrol and 196.96p a litre for diesel - a drop from the start of the month when petrol cost 191.53p a litre and diesel was 199.07p a litre.

Prices have fallen from record highs seen in recent months driven by the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russian oil.

Luke Bosdet, the AA's fuel price spokesman, says a fall in price could follow - but it would be down to the fuel trade passing savings on to the customer.

He said: "Wholesale petrol's trajectory, if sustained, would lead to savings of a tenner off a tank from the record highs, providing the fuel trade is prepared to pass them on."

He added: "The problem is that, in many places, the price cuts are quite simply not happening despite more than six weeks of falling costs. Roads may suffer extreme heat...but pump prices should have cooled off much more significantly by now."

Liberal Democrat MP Jamie Stone has added that people living in rural parts of the UK are facing far higher costs than others in more urban areas.

Lib Dem analysis shows households in rural areas can pay £114 a week in transport costs - nearly £40 more than those living in towns and cities.

Accusing the UK Government of "refusing to lift a finger to help", Mr Stone demanded action from the five Tory MPs who are fighting to become the next prime minister.

The Liberal Democrats want rural fuel duty relief to be doubled to 10p a litre, as well as claiming the scheme should be "significantly expanded" to cover more areas.

The party also wants an emergency cut in VAT, reducing the charge from 20% to 17.5%.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the price of food has gone up by almost 10% in one year, according to shocking new figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said today that i nflation hit a 40-year high of 9.4% in June.

Moreover, households will see their yearly food shopping bills hiked by £380 this year due to the soaring price of groceries.

In fact, some goods have risen in price by up to 26.3% - including butter, bread, potatoes, beer and coffee.
