A38 road closure near Bristol Airport begins tonight as passengers advised to plan

Bristol Airport has renewed its warning to motorists ahead of a road closure beginning this evening (Sunday, May 22).

North Somerset Council plans to close the A38 south of Bristol Airport (between Ashley Lane and New Road) every evening between 8pm and 6am, until Wednesday, June 1.

In a tweet, the airport wrote: "Road info: the A38 South of Bristol Airport (between Ashley Lane and New Road) will be closed for maintenance by North Somerset Council from this evening through to Wednesday June 1 between the hours of 20.00hr and 06.00hr."

This isn't the first warning the airport has given for its passengers who hope to travel along that route to get to airport parking and jet off on their holidays. Last week the airport advised that the closure would mean its site could only be accessed via the A38 southbound from the Bristol direction.

That means anyone wishing to park in the Silver Zone car park during these hours will have to access via this route.

Bristol Airport has been in the news a lot over the past few weeks as many passengers have faced long queues, delays and missed or cancelled flights. The airport - and airlines - have had to grapple with IT issues and a string of significant staff shortages which have added to delays.

North Somerset Council advised motorists earlier this month of the improvements to the A38 at Redhill, and said to minimise disruption the patching works will take place at night.

Its statement said: "As a result, the road from Ashey Lane up to and including New Road will be closed between 8pm and 6am on those days, apart from Thursday the 26th and the weekend of Saturday the 28th and Sunday the 29th when no work will be taking place and the road will remain open.

"The works are in preparation for surface dressing which is due to take place in early July. Anyone travelling between Bristol and Somerset on the nights of the road closure is advised to go via the A370."

The council is taking the opportunity of the road closures to remove some ash trees adjacent to the road which are suffering from Ash Dieback, a fungal disease which is often fatal. A rapid decline in the health of these trees means urgent action is needed to remove them for safety reasons, the council said.
