A24's 'Elden Ring' Movie Adaptation Already Finished Filming, But When Is It Releasing?

Alex Garland's live-action take on "Elden Ring" has officially wrapped filming, marking a major milestone for one of A24's most ambitious projects to date.

Fans of FromSoftware's acclaimed dark fantasy RPG will still need to wait quite a while before actually seeing the finished film, though.

A24's 'Elden Ring' Movie Adaptation Wraps Filming

Word of the wrap came not from A24 directly, but from prop artist Sean Schofield, who shared a now-deleted Instagram post showing crew gifts and a thank-you message credited to Garland and the production team.

The post reportedly included an "Elden Ring" branded backpack and a specialized clapboard keychain, giving fans their first real confirmation that principal photography had concluded.

Filming began in spring 2026 and took place in the United Kingdom, running for roughly six months before wrapping in late July.

Garland, who wrote and directed the film, is a well-documented "Elden Ring" fan who reportedly wrote a 160-page spec script on his own initiative before pitching the project directly to FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki.

This bold move from Garland ultimately secured him the adaptation rights from the franchise rights holders.

When Is the 'Elden Ring' Movie Coming?

Despite wrapping filming, "Elden Ring" isn't set to hit theaters until March 3, 2028, giving the production roughly 19 months for post-production work. A24 and Bandai Namco confirmed the film is being shot for IMAX, with a budget north of $100 million, reportedly making it the most expensive film A24 has ever produced.

That extended post-production window isn't considered unusual given the scale of what the film needs to bring to screen, from sweeping Erdtree vistas to the kind of intricate boss designs longtime fans could recognize instantly.

A24 has not publicly commented on the wrap report as of this writing, leaving Schofield's now-deleted post as the primary source confirming filming has concluded.

What to Expect from 'Elden Ring' Movie

"Elden Ring" originally launched in 2022 from developer FromSoftware, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with world-building contributions from fantasy author George R.R. Martin, who is also producing the film. The game's crew also includes the likes of Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Peter Rice, and Vince Gerardis.

The game has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and collected many awards in its debut, including a 2022 Game of the Year award from The Game Awards, as well as other wins under the same event for Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Role-Playing Game.

These, along with other wins and nominations, have cemented its place as one of the most decorated titles in gaming history.

The film's cast includes Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Sonoya Mizuno, Havana Rose Liu, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz, though the specific roles each actor plays remain undisclosed as of press time.

Garland is known for genre work like "Ex Machina," "Annihilation," and "Civil War," giving him a track record well suited to translating "Elden Ring's" mysterious lore and demanding combat into a cinematic experience. With filming now complete and a March 2028 release date locked in, fans have a long wait ahead before finding out exactly how that translation turns out.
