In January 2004, Brooklyn-based writer Judith Levine and her partner, Paul, made a simple but difficult agreement: for the next 12 months, they would buy only what they considered necessary. Food, medicines, household essentials and expenses connected with their work were allowed, but new clothes, entertainment and many everyday treats were off the list. The experiment became the basis of Levine's book Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping, published in 2006.
