THE new series of Rebus starring Outlander’s Richard Rankin in the lead role has been met with positive reviews following its release.
All episodes of the series are currently available to view on BBC iPlayer with many critics praising the new take on the iconic Scottish detective.
The latest story follows 40-year-old John Rebus (Rankin), who finds himself at a crossroads following an altercation with an infamous Edinburgh gangster.
What have critics said about the new show?
The series has generally received positive reviews, with a number of media outlets across the UK giving it four stars.
The Evening Standard described it as an “unrelentingly bleak but brilliant” show with its leading man in particular singled out for praise.
The Daily Telegraphy’s review meanwhile described the show as a “most welcome revival” and also awarded it four stars.
A series based on Ian Rankin’s novels previously aired between 2000 and 2007 starring John Hannah and Ken Stott in the titular role.
Elsewhere, the Radio Times said the show put a “fresh-spin” on the character and praised the latest series for not being a direct adaptation of a specific book but rather a “story that wants to be judged on its own merits” which it said made it accessible to both fans of the books and newcomers.
The Independent meanwhile gave the show three stars in its review as did the Financial Times.
Who is in the new Rebus series?
Rankin is the show’s leading man and he is known to many for his role as Roger Wakefield in the hit series Outlander.
Starring as his partner is Lucie Shorthouse, who recently spoke with The National about what it was like filming the show in Scotland.
Other cast members include Thoren Ferguson as DI Malcolm Fox and Caroline Lee-Johnson as DI Gill Templar.

All six episodes of the new show are currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
However, the first episode also aired on BBC Scotland at 10pm on Friday night and will be on again on BBC One on Saturday, May 18 at 9.25pm.
