Journalist to be crowned king of Uganda’s Tooro after succession row

Incoming Tooro King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I performs traditional rituals and rites ahead of his coronation, as the Tooro Kingdom prepares for the transition to a new reign at the Karuziika Palace, in Buhesi, Bunyangabu District, Uganda September 28, 2026 - (Reuters)

A journalist is due to be crowned king of a traditional monarchy on Tuesday, following the death of its former "boy king" last month which caused grief and a succession dispute in Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom.

The new monarch, a prince who spent many years working as an editor and broadcaster with the Uganda Broadcasting Corp, has chosen the regnal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo. After performing overnight rituals, he was ushered into the palace ahead of his official unveiling to followers later on Tuesday.
