A 'traditional' fish and chip shop is opening in Swansea's Wind Street

A good old-fashioned chip shop is set to open in Jack Murphys in Wind Street this weekend, with a retro gaming bar to follow in a few weeks.

The chippy, aptly called "Jack the Chipper", will be serving up traditional chip shop grub including rissoles, sausages and chips. It's set to stay open until 3am every day of the week, and is likely to be a hit with Wind Street party-goers in search of a meal after a night on the town.

Steve Lewis, owner of Jack Murphy's, said: "We decided that we wanted to create a traditional fish and chip shop in an Irish bar. You can order to eat inside, and there's a takeaway option outside, too." You can read more Swansea stories here.

General Manager Paul Alpin, 36, added: "The menu is traditional and fully fresh. There isn't much choice for late-night food on Wind Street other than kebab shops, so I think the chip shop will work well.

"We'll be open from 5pm until 3am, seven days a week. Coming into the summer time, we'll probably start opening a bit earlier, too."

In four to six weeks, the venue will also be opening a unique concept gaming bar called Game Over, which will be located on the floor above the chip shop.

It's set to include multiple pool tables, electronic darts and vintage arcade machines.

Paul said: "Game Over is a retro gaming bar, and it's the first of its kind and size in the city. It will have 20 retro games including games like Street Fighter, then around six retro gaming arcade consoles like Nintendo 64s. We'll have old PlayStations, too, which will be fun.

"We're hoping to become something of a hangout place where people an come and chill, as well as have a drink and party, if they want to. It's not just targeted toward students, either, I'm hopeful that a lot of older people who remember retro gaming will come in and enjoy as well."

Places to eat near where you live:

Paul said the venue was also planning on converting the upstairs windows into sliding doors, so people could enjoy a good view of Wind Street with some fresh air.

He said: "People will be able to enjoy a good view once the windows are converted, which will be really nice in the summer time in particular."

Jack Murphys is also home to cult-favourite vegan eatery Vegan Filth, rave-venue The Attic, and Basement Jacks - a student-style club room, fitting for those wanting to knock back a jagerbomb and dance the night away.

Steve Lewis, who in the past has been behind the likes of The Zone, Face Off and Sin City, first opened the bar in 2012 after finding inspiration in the venues of New York.

He previously told WalesOnline: "There was nowhere on this street (Wind Street) doing anything like rock music. They all wanted to play R&B and dance music. We also didn't have an Irish bar here. I had lots of ideas to create somewhere new based on a New York Irish bar. I used to go to New York and saw a gap in the market for alternative music.

"I was going to call it Scruffy Murphys initially, but with Jack being so synonymous with the city, due to the Swansea Jack, I decided to amalgamate the two."
