'A top team' - Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic breaks silence on Man City transfer links

Mateo Kovacic has left the door open for a switch to Manchester City after experiencing a "very bad" season at Chelsea.

Reports suggest the midfielder is already in talks with the Premier League champions while the futures of Bernardo Silva and club captain Ilkay Gundogan remain unclear.

As City gear up for the Champions League final on Saturday, Kovacic is readying himself for Croatia’s Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media ahead of the clash, with a final against either Spain or Italy up for grabs, the 29-year-old addressed his future amid the transfer links with City, who are on the verge of the treble.

“I have one more year with Chelsea, this season was very bad,” the four-time Champions League winner said. “Everything is going towards the fact that after five good years I will change, but in football anything can happen. Right now, I’m focused on Croatia and the Nations League.”

He added: “Manchester City is a top team and deserves to be in the Champions League final. That’s what I have to say. The summer is long, we’ll see what happens.

“Chelsea is phenomenal for me. I love the city and the fans, they love me, I have wonderful memories of Chelsea. We’ll see what happens.”

Kovacic played 37 times this season, including in January’s 1-0 defeat to City. He ended the campaign with two goals and two assists.

Chelsea are expected to offload a number of players coming towards the end of their deals this summer in order to manoeuvre within Financial Fair Play rules after a mammoth spend over the past year.
