A Syphilis Sore Turned Up on the Nipple, a Spot So Unusual It Can Pass for Eczema or Even Cancer

Most people picture a syphilis sore appearing on the genitals. A new medical image shows one somewhere far less expected: the nipple.

The case, titled "Syphilitic Chancre on the Nipple," appears in the October 8, 2026, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine as part of its Images in Clinical Medicine series. It comes from physicians Yangbin Wang and Chun-Fang Guo of Shenyang Seventh People's Hospital in Liaoning province, China.
