A 31-year-old woman in her first pregnancy went in for a routine fetal ultrasound at 27 weeks. The scan turned up something no one was looking for: air around her right lung.
She had a pneumothorax, a collapsed lung caused by air leaking into the space around it, and she was only mildly short of breath. Oxygen and a chest tube failed to stop the leak, so surgeons operated while she was still pregnant. Inside her chest, they found tissue similar to the uterine lining growing in her lung and on her diaphragm.
