A red fox has completed an extraordinary transatlantic journey, stowing away on a cargo ship from Southampton, England, before its discovery in New York and transfer to the Bronx Zoo.
The 11-pound (5-kilogram) male fox appears healthy after initial examinations, the zoo confirmed Wednesday. Keith Lovett, the zoo's director of animal programmes, noted its resilience, stating: "He seems to be settling in well. It’s gone through a lot."
The fox, estimated to be two years old, boarded the automobile-laden ship in Southampton on 4 February, arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey on 18 February. It was transferred to the zoo followed the next day, though how it boarded and was discovered remains a mystery, with zoo representatives awaiting details from government agencies.
The fox, a species formally known as Vulpes vulpes is widespread in Europe, Asia, North America and parts of Africa. He is currently in the zoo’s veterinary centre. As an omnivore, his diet includes produce, proteins, and biscuit-like items. A long-term home will be sought once he clears further health screenings.
