A Place in the Sun presenter Jean Johansson was faced with a huge challenge on the show as one retired couple were on the hunt for their dream holiday home in Italy - but with an incredibly small budget.
Retired NHS nurse Linda and her painter and decorator partner Peter were keen to purchase a property in Abruzzo, Italy but didn't want to spend a great deal of cash so turned to the Channel 4 show for help.
However, when the couple told the Scots presenter that their maximum budget was £60,000, she admitted that this was the first time that she had ever worked with such a low budget.
The pair said that they did have an "open-mind" about the property they would be able to afford.
Linda said: "We are just wondering what you're going to come up with because our budget isn't a very big one."
Jean admitted that it would be quite the challenge. She said: "I am glad you've brought that up, Linda. I mean I have to say, I've never worked with a budget of £60,000, so it's going to be a challenge for me."
The reason for their search in southern Italy was so they could spend half the year there so ideally they would be looking for a one bedroom property with some outdoor space.
Jean then asked if there was any wiggle room on their budget at all and they agreed that they could stretch to £80,000 for their perfect property.
For the first property of their search, Jean showed the couple around a three-bedroom townhouse with three balconies, a large roof terrace with stunning scenic views and a lovely outdoor space.
The property cost £63,000 and the couple really liked the open-plan kitchen diner, two living areas, three double bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Linda said: "It's beautiful, it's a lot of house for the money. It's everything we asked for really, apart from a garden."
After showing them around four more properties, Linda and Peter said that they were set on the three-bedroom townhouse.
Peter told Jean he wanted to put forward a "verbal" offer of £57,000 which, to no surprise, was immediately declined by the owner.
The couple then decided to raise their offer, which was accepted.
However, viewers of the Channel 4 show were outraged at the couple's cheeky haggling considering their considerably low budget.
One tweeted: "This is a bit like a tooth extraction with no pain relief!" while another posted: "What's he on about 'verbally?' Is he just playing games?"
While another raged: "Peter is not going to be handing over any money, not a chance in hell."
And another commented: "Verbal offer? He's not parting with his money."
