A Place in the Sun star Jonnie Irwin admitted to hospital amid terminal cancer battle

Presenter Jonnie Irwin has announced that he is currently being monitored in hospital as he continues to fight terminal cancer.

The 49-year-old A Place in the Sun presenter was first diagnosed with cancer in August 2020, after being prompted to seek medical attention while driving back from filming for the Channel 4 show when his vision became blurred.

He was subsequently given the devastating diagnosis of terminal cancer, after medical experts identified that lung cancer had spread to his brain - predicting that he had just six months left to live.

He chose to keep his diagnosis private until November last year, a little over two years after initially receiving the news. Since going public with his condition, Jonnie has kept his fans and followers updated on social media - and while mainly positive, today the father-of-three took to Instagram to share the news that he was being monitored in hospital.

In a social media post, he wrote: "In hospital this week monitoring a changeover in my pain management regime. Fingers crossed I’ll be out in time to make an appearance on Sunday for this weekends @aplaceinthesunofficial LIVE event at @olympialondon in Kensington.

"It’s packed with presenters from Friday including @jasmineharman @benhillmantv @laurahamiltontv @benhillmantv. Tickets info in bio and below; Hope to see you there…x."

Soon after posting the update on Wednesday afternoon Jonnie was inundated by kind words of support and well wishes from friends and followers. One, said: "Speedy recovery!" while another, wished: "Sending love."

A third wrote: "Take care of yourself! Love from Israel," while a fourth, added: "You’re a force to be reckoned with Jonnie. You really are awesome x."

A fifth echoed: "You are a strong determined man.....I have complete faith you will be there. Take care," while another, said: "Hope you are well enough to be there. Everyone is looking forward to seeing you there x."

Another supporter penned: "Good luck, hope they get it sorted thumbs up x."

It comes shortly after Jonnie appeared on the One Chat Podcast by AIG, where he opened up about a number of topics relating to how his life and train of thought has changed over the last few years. A dad to Rex, Cormac and Rafa, Jonnie cited how 'lucky' he is to have seen his children's upbringing and how much they have changed since being born.

On the podcast, he said: "This past couple of years I've spent more time at home than ever I have before, and I'm lucky to have seen every bit of their upbringing and to see how they've changed. It makes me very proud and I'm kind of thankful for that."

Jonnie also mentioned how he was "trying to build something" for his family and their future, and how the horrifying diagnosis almost three years ago has made him appreciate his loved ones more. He added: "But me working now is me helping, or trying to build something for my family in the future, and anyone in my position will be focused on family but it's made me appreciate my family more, especially my wife.

"You know, my children are everything to me but even now I'm probably a bit too focused on their future, rather than enjoying them now. This process is helping me enjoy the here and now, enjoy my life and enjoy my family. And I've noticed my family a lot more rather than coming home from work 'how's your day? bye.'"
