A Place In The Sun bosses have said they "left no stone unturned" to keep Jonnie Irwin on as host as they spoke out on his claims he was axed after revealing his terminal cancer diagnosis.
The presenter, 49, who earlier this month announced he had just months to live after lung cancer spread to his brain, said he was "heartbroken" when his contract wasn't renewed.
Now, the broadcaster has spoken out about Jonnie's departure from the show, saying they were unable to keep him on due oto be unable to secure insurance cover for him.
In a statement a spokesperson for Freeform Productions said: "Jonnie has been a hugely important part of the A Place in The Sun family for over 18 years and all of us were deeply saddened by his diagnosis.
"Much loved by everyone on the production, no stone was left unturned in trying to enable Jonnie to continue his international filming with us during Covid but the production company were unable to secure adequate insurance cover for him."
They added: "Whilst we were unable to continue to film abroad with him, we're delighted that he was able to remain as part of our team in the UK for exhibitions.
"We of course understand how frustrating this must be for him at this incredibly difficult time."
Speaking to The Sun while breaking down in tears, Jonnie said: "As soon as people find out you've got cancer they write you off, yes, I have stage four and it's terminal — but not yet, so let me live my life while I can.
"As soon as I told A Place In The Sun about my diagnosis they paid me for the rest of the season but didn't renew my contract, they knew I wanted to carry on."
The presenter went on to tell the publication that he feels "let down" and can no longer watch the Channel 4 programme.
Despite being cut from the presenting bill of A Place In The Sun, Jonnie continued to work throughout his chemotherapy treatment while filming BBC's Escape To The Country.
Having kept his diagnosis between himself and his nearest and dearest, the dad-of-two explained that he feared the news would cause his work to dry up.
Now, he's revealed that every opportunity he is given, he will accept the money in order to provide for his family following his death.
