A Patient Accidentally Received 12.5 Grams of a Painkiller Banned in the US and Never Got Sick

A patient at a German university hospital was accidentally given 12.5 grams of dipyrone in a single oral dose, roughly 132 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. That is several times the maximum amount an adult is meant to receive across an entire day.

Clinicians then watched for 62 days. Nothing happened. No gastrointestinal toxicity, no liver injury, no other clinically significant organ damage. The case report in SAGE Open Medical Case Reports appeared on April 15, 2026, written by a team from the Department of Anaesthesiology at Universitatsklinikum Erlangen, Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nurnberg.
