Ubisoft has a new "Far Cry" project in active development even as its studio has confirmed it scrapped a different game in the same universe,
New 'Far Cry' Game Is Under Development From Vantage Studios
According to a report from Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, the new title has already moved past its concept stage and entered full production at Vantage Studios.
The new project, codenamed Kodiak, passed its conceptualization phase earlier this month and is now in full development. Sources described the game as "really ambitious," built as an open-world FPS where "player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage." According to the report, Kodiak is still several years away from release.
Kodiak is being built using the foundations laid by Maverick, the extraction shooter project it replaces, though the game has shifted away from that genre entirely in favor of the series' traditional open-world format.
Vantage Studios, the Ubisoft subsidiary responsible for "Far Cry," "Assassin's Creed," and "Rainbow Six Siege," is currently juggling Kodiak alongside its other major franchise commitments, including "Assassin's Creed: Hexe."
There is still no official confirmation from Ubisoft or Vantage Studios regarding this new open-world FPS game under the "Far Cry" series, but it is expected to be a spin-off set in its world.
Ubisoft Green Lights 'Far Cry 7,' Another New Game
Alongside Kodiak, Vantage Studios continues work on the next mainline "Far Cry" entry, internally codenamed Blackbird and expected to eventually launch as "Far Cry 7," according to Engadget.
That project has faced its own repeated internal delays, though Henderson's report indicates Blackbird is now on a solid path toward completion, with a multiplayer component allowing more than one player to experience the world together.
Vantage Studios co-CEO Charlie Guillemot reportedly described Blackbird as "honestly impressive" during an internal interview, referring to it as "Act One." That phrasing suggests Ubisoft may be positioning Blackbird as the starting point for a run of similarly styled mainline "Far Cry" games going forward, provided the title performs well after release.
Which 'Far Cry' Game Has Been Canceled?
The game that got canceled was codenamed Maverick, an extraction shooter spinoff rather than a mainline "Far Cry" title. Earlier leaks had claimed "Far Cry 7" itself would be an extraction shooter set in Alaska, but Henderson's report clarifies those details actually belonged to Maverick, not the mainline sequel.
Rather than scrapping the work entirely, Ubisoft is repurposing what had already been built for Maverick to help construct Kodiak, avoiding a total loss of development resources even as the extraction shooter concept itself gets dropped.
Ubisoft has not officially confirmed the existence of Kodiak or commented publicly on Maverick's cancellation, meaning everything currently known about both projects comes from Henderson's sourcing at Insider Gaming.
With Blackbird reportedly progressing well and Kodiak now moving through early development, Vantage Studios appears to be leaning further into the "Far Cry" franchise as one of Ubisoft's key pillars going forward. This is even as the extraction shooter trend that shaped Maverick's original concept gets left behind.
