A recall of Lundberg Family Farms white jasmine rice that began in the spring moved back into national headlines this week, and the reason has almost nothing to do with the rice. The recall itself is not new. What is new is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published the full record of it in the agency's weekly enforcement database, listing the exact quantity involved and the states where the product was shipped.
That database entry has been picked up by dozens of outlets, many of which described the action as an expansion. The available records do not support that framing. In April, Lundberg told reporters the recall covered roughly 4,500 cases of two-pound bags, which works out to about the same volume as the 27,324 individual packages now listed in the federal record. The unit of measurement changed. The recall did not grow.
