A Man's Seizure Turned into Pop Dancing on Video, and Doctors Noticed Music Was Playing in the Background

A 44-year-old man undergoing inpatient epilepsy monitoring had a seizure that, on camera, looked more like a routine than a medical event. His right hand began pointing again and again. Within about half a minute of the seizure's start, his body launched into fast, energetic movements that his neurologists described as "pop dancing."

The brain-wave recording running at the same moment tied the dance to the seizure itself. Neurologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas reported the case in Epileptic Disorders, and they flagged a detail that makes it stranger still: music was playing in the background, and the man had never shown dancing-like behavior during a seizure before.

The report was published online in March 2026 and appears in the journal's August issue. It is a short educational submission that pairs the video with teaching questions for clinicians.

A Seizure That Began in the Right Temporal Lobe

The patient is left-handed and has focal epilepsy, meaning his seizures start in one part of the brain. Some of them occasionally spread into full-body convulsions. He was taking two anti-seizure medications, levetiracetam and lacosamide.

He was in what the authors call a phase 1 pre-surgical evaluation. That is the noninvasive stage of testing in which patients are recorded on video and scalp EEG so doctors can pin down where seizures begin before deciding whether surgery is an option.

When this seizure started, the EEG showed an abrupt burst of rhythmic activity at 9 to 11 cycles per second over the right temporal region, on the side of the head near the ear. The rhythm then slowed into sharper waves and spread rapidly to the right frontal region, the left frontal and temporal regions, and the midline.

On video, the repetitive finger pointing came first. The dancing followed roughly 30 to 40 seconds after the electrical onset, according to the report.

Doctors Say a Brain Network, Not One Spot, Produced the Dance

The authors argue the case supports a specific idea about how seizure dancing happens. The onset pattern resembled earlier reports of dancing-like movements in people with temporal or frontal lobe epilepsy, they wrote, which fits the hypothesis that ictal dancing arises as seizure activity spreads through a distributed network in the brain rather than staying in a single spot.

The timing in this recording is consistent with that view. The dance did not appear the moment the seizure began. It emerged about half a minute later, in a seizure whose electrical activity was spreading beyond its starting point and across to the other side of the brain.

Seizure dancing appears in only a small number of published case reports. In a 2009 video report in Neurology, doctors described a 39-year-old man whose girlfriend had seen dancing movements during his seizures, although his EEG could not pin down where the seizures started. In 2017, neurologists at Seoul National University Hospital described what they called the most plausible example of dancing captured on simultaneous video and EEG, in a 42-year-old woman with right temporal lobe epilepsy. Her seizure began with right hand movements and speech before turning into complex, rhythmic, sequential movements during and after the seizure.

The Texas case follows a similar script: right temporal onset, right hand automatisms first, dancing second.

Background Music Raises a Question the Case Cannot Answer

The most intriguing line in the report is also the most tentative. Because the man had no history of dancing-like seizures and music was playing in the background, the authors wrote, it is possible that environmental stimuli contributed to how the seizure looked.

That is a possibility, not a finding. A single recording cannot show whether the music shaped the movements, triggered anything, or was simply a coincidence. The report does not describe the music or how loud it was.

The question fits a broader interest in how surroundings influence seizures. Senior author Irfan Sheikh is also a co-author of a separate case report in the same journal on seizures set off by podcasts.

The patient gave written consent for publication of the video and EEG, and the work received no specific funding. Sheikh is an associate editor of Epileptic Disorders, a disclosure listed in the paper, and the other three authors reported no disclosures related to the work.

What the Case Means for People Living with Epilepsy

Epilepsy is common. About 2.9 million U.S. adults reported active epilepsy in 2021 and 2022, and about 456,000 children have it, according to the CDC.

Most seizures look nothing like this one. But the case is a reminder that seizures can produce complex, organized-looking behavior that an onlooker might read as deliberate. Here, it was the pairing of video with EEG that tied the pointing and dancing to seizure activity.

The findings come from one patient and cannot say how often seizure dancing occurs or whether music plays any role in other people. They do not change treatment guidance. People who notice repeated, unexplained episodes of unusual movement in themselves or a family member should describe them in detail to a clinician. Anyone taking anti-seizure medication should not change doses without medical advice.
