A New Jersey man recently claimed his bill at Texas Roadhouse was allegedly changed after he left a cash tip, which he says led to an unexpected charge on his bank statement. Shawn Bumpass, known as @bigshawnbump on TikTok, posted a video to explain how his $64 bill allegedly became an $84 charge.
Bumpass said the situation started when he and his group left a $10 cash tip for their server. As found by Brobible, he claimed that he intentionally wrote zero on the tip line of his receipt. He later said he received a notification from his bank showing a higher total than he expected.
According to Bumpass, he alleged that the server added a 2 in front of the zero he had written on the tip line, making it appear as a $20 tip. He also claimed the server altered the total on the receipt, purportedly turning a 6 into an 8. In his video, which had accumulated approximately 120,200 views at the time of writing, he expressed frustration, saying, “Why the f— my waiter from the restaurant just really tried to play me, yo,” and added, “Why the f— I just get a notification today? My s— got changed to $84.”
How Bumpass responded after noticing the changed charge
In an email conversation with BroBible, Bumpass said that he contacted the restaurant about the incident. He told the outlet that management apologized to him, though he said he was unsure about what legal steps to take. He also said that he had initiated a payment dispute that day, noting that nothing else had happened beyond that step.
Reaction from viewers on TikTok appeared divided, as some commenters felt the alleged actions were unacceptable. “Press charges! That’s literally illegal,” one user wrote. Another urged, “Actually talk to a manager about that. That is not ok!!!!!” Other Texas Roadhouse stories have also apparently caused debate online, including one about a woman who found a $15 dining loophole.
Others appeared to be more focused on the tip amount. “10 dollars…she wrong, but you wrong too,” one commenter wrote. Another simply commented, “$10 on a $64,” followed by three disapproving emojis. Another commenter said, ‘$10 isn’t a “nice tip” lmao.’

Not everyone apparently agreed that the tip was inadequate. One user who identified as a waitress wrote, “As a waitress who’s BIG on tipping, $10 cash is acceptable for the total listed! Anything less would’ve been bogus and the fact that it’s cash is even better.”
Another commenter who said they work in the industry added, “$10 on $64 is acceptable… I’d be content. you wouldn’t believe how many times it’s been more like $5 on $100 or nothing at all.” Servers at the chain have drawn attention before, such as one case where a server ruined a birthday surprise with one simple question.
A separate TikTok user previously shared a story about a former coworker who, she claimed, regularly inflated tips by allegedly adding zeros to amounts left by customers, purportedly turning a $3 tip into $30. While that TikToker acknowledged that the practice is an arrestable offense, she said she never reported her colleague, though she claimed to have tried to stop the behavior.
