A man raised in poverty without a father and who barely made it through high school went on to open 54 Burger King restaurants across three US states, later donating more than $2 million through his foundation

John Gullo’s journey from a poor, fatherless childhood in a tough Italian neighbourhood of Buffalo, New York, to becoming a successful businessman and philanthropist is a story of perseverance, service and giving back.

Among his achievements was opening what is believed to be the first Burger King restaurant attached to a gas station, in Hurricane, Utah.
