A 68-year-old man went to the hospital because both of his feet had been swelling and reddening for a week, and a new wound had opened on the outside of his right foot. He had no chest pain and denied any obvious shortness of breath. Yet imaging done during his evaluation showed that part of his right lung had twisted on itself, a rare emergency that can cut off the lung's blood supply.
The case was published in Cureus on Sept. 4 by a team that includes surgeons at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. The title sums up the surprise: the lung torsion was "identified as an incidental finding," and it still required urgent surgery.
