The Western Sydney Wanderers have re-signed new club captain Marcelo through to the end of the 2023-24 A-League Men season.
The Brazilian centre-back joined the Wanderers this season and has been pivotal in masterminding the side's defence on its charge up the ladder; through 21 matches, the Wanderers have conceded 18 goals - seven goals fewer than the next-best defences.
Marcelo's football resume boasts stints with Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais and the Bundesliga's Hannover 96 but the 35-year-old said remaining with the Wanderers was an easy decision.
"It's been six months here and I am really happy," he said.
"My family is happy, and I am happy with the staff and the players. We have been working really hard to achieve something this season so I am grateful I can continue to help next season.
"It's also important to leave a legacy in football and that is what I want to do at the Western Sydney Wanderers and in my life."
Coach Marko Rudan welcomed Marcelo's recommitment.
"Marcelo has well and truly embedded himself into what it means to represent not only the club, but the Western Sydney region," said Rudan.
"We are very lucky to not only have a player of his calibre at the club, but also person, with Marcelo committing to help grow the club both on and off the field until the end of 2023/24."
The Wanderers will have the chance to celebrate Marcelo's new contract when they host Adelaide United on Friday for a clash of A-League Men heavyweights.
With a victory, the third-placed Wanderers will leapfrog the Reds into second spot on the ladder as the regular season enters its final month.
