'A leader among Japan's next generation' - Manchester United transfer target tipped for bright future

Manchester United's approach for Urawa Red Diamonds goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has been met with surprise in Japan despite the youngster's considerable potential.

MEN Sport understands extensive talks have been undertaken by United with Andre Onana over a potential move should David de Gea leave the club. And another player who is a target for Erik ten Hag is Suzuki.

The £5m-rated goalkeeper has undergone conversations with the Reds about a potential switch to Old Trafford but at this stage no bid has been submitted for the 20-year-old. But the American-born keeper is highly-rated in Japan and is tipped to have a bright future.

"He's very well regarded as a leader among the next generation of Japanese goalkeepers," The Japan Times' Dan Orlowitz said. "Currently, the goalkeeper position is the national team's weakest position.

"It is hard for me to wax lyrical about his playing style considering the last game I watched him in was the EAFF E-1 Championship last year and I don't recall him needing to do much work in that game. On the same morning Sponichi reported interest from Manchester United, other Japanese media outlets Nikkan Sports and Sports Hochi reported Belgian side Sint-Truiden had made a formal offer which makes more sense because they were taken over by Japanese businessman and the club is seen as a landing ground for Japanese talent.

"He only has eight league appearances to his name and the one senior cap. He could and should be Japan's starter in Paris [Olympic Games] to get more minutes. Minutes are the most important thing for him and the programme."

MEN Sport understands United are not against signing two goalkeepers this summer and Suzuki would be a back-up should he arrive. The Reds have Tom Heaton as their only fit, senior keeper with Dean Henderson currently injured and De Gea in contract limbo.
