While much of the world is living in 2026, Ethiopia has just welcomed 2019. The largest country on the Horn of Africa celebrated Enkutatash, its New Year, on September 11, 2026, which is also the beginning of a new year according to a calendar that remains roughly seven to eight years behind the Gregorian system used by most of the world.
This is a reflection of Ethiopia’s unique past, its religion and the way in which it used to measure time, which is one of the many cultural systems that have remained intact through the ages of its independence.
