A 'Home Display' appeared in Google's code, and the timing could be significant

What you need to know

  • Rumors claim that a "Google Home Display" product name has appeared in the company's smart home app code on iOS.
  • This model was spotted alongside several other home devices, and a "setup" string.
  • What we're expecting for Spring 2026 (and potentially I/O) is the Home Speaker, which Google revealed during its huge Gemini for Home launch in October.

Rumors are bubbling up about a potential new entry to Google's smart home ecosystem, and we can't help but feel like the timing's a little too perfect.

A post by MacRumors' analyst, Aaron, on X highlights a mention of a purported new smart device in the company's code (via 9to5Google). Aaron states that the discovery was made in the Google Home app's code on iOS. Within the many strings, they found a "Google Home Display" name. Additionally, a subsequent string marked "setup" was also spotted.

This name was seen alongside several of Google's other smart home products, like the Nest Hub Max, Nest Hub, and Home Mini. Other than sitting with the smart home devices we know today, the publication's analyst couldn't find anything more substantial. In the end, all we're left with is the device's alleged name.

What's most curious is that a long-awaited product is listed there, too: the Google Home Speaker. Seeing this here gets our minds thinking, considering I/O 2026 is right around the corner.

Is I/O bringing more than we realize?

Let's take a moment to remember Google's grand "Gemini for Home" reveal last fall. There was a great deal of discussion about how its AI can help users at home, which we've seen it consistently work on through its early access. However, one device during that reveal that we saw but didn't get was the Google Home Speaker. This small speaker, equipped with a color Gemini-coded ring light, was said to launch in Spring 2026.

Android Central's Take

If I were to think about a "Google Home Display," I feel like I could kind of see where Google would go with it. What gets me more interested is its design. Sure, a rectangular form-factor, right? But look at the design of the Googlebooks. Now, look at that neat little ring light for the Home Speaker. Imagine that on this "Home Display." Sound sick to me. And if Google's not think that, and sees this, you're welcome.

The Home Speaker was reported to produce 360-degree audio and pair with the TV Streamer. Aside from that, Google made it clear that it engineered this model for Gemini. The visual feedback, the ability to converse with the AI, and more are its hallmarks. Seeing Spring 2026 gets us thinking about I/O 2026. The bigger question here is: will we see this alleged "Home Display" teased during the keynote?

The folks at 9to5 referenced this, too, but an interview with Google Home's chief, Anish Kattukaran, after that Gemini for Home reveal is important. Kattukaran said that Google was working on new "Nest Hub devices," though a date for launch wasn't discussed. If we look at how it's changed its naming with the "Home Speaker," maybe this leak is onto something.
