A Hip Tendon Tear Hid Beneath Intact Fibers, and Surgeons Gave It a Designer Name: GUCCI

A hip tendon tear that hides beneath healthy-looking fibers now has a name that is hard to forget: GUCCI, short for "Gluteal Undersurface Concealed Crescent Injury." In September, the label moved from a single case report into a surgical technique paper in Arthroscopy Techniques, where Colorado surgeons described how to repair these tears from the deep side.

The story started with one patient. A 63-year-old woman had pain on the outside of her left hip, and an MRI showed high-grade gluteal tendinosis and partial tearing. When treatment without surgery failed, surgeons operated. The surface of her gluteus medius tendon looked intact. The damage was underneath.
