A familiar discussion at Fuller's

My Emeny’s Emeny is my friend

When 179-year-old pub chain Fuller, Smith & Turner appointed Simon Emeny as its new boss, the company tried something completely new: He was the first CEO not to be related to the Fuller, Smith or Turner family.

A decade on, the firm looks poised to try something else completely new: a U-turn.

Spy has it on good authority from a senior pub industry source that the board has discussed with Emeny his transition to Chairman so he can be replaced as CEO by…someone related to the Fuller, Smith or Turner family. A bitter pint to swallow.

Spy put the claim to Fuller’s, but they were keeping schtum. A spokesperson said: “Every business looks at succession.  There are no immediate plans (Spy’s emphasis) for Michael Turner to retire as Chairman or for Simon to move from his current role of Chief Executive.”
