A ‘digital detox’ hut hidden in Cheshire forces guests to lock their phones away

It’s something we’re all guilty of: endlessly scrolling through our phones and spending every spare moment staring at a screen. We all know it’s not good for us, yet we just can’t seem to stop.

In a bid to help us disconnect from our devices, two friends created digital detox huts which encourage people to switch off from technology and immerse themselves in their surroundings. Originally starting out in the south, Unplugged, founded by Hector Hughes and Ben Elliot, has now launched its first hut in the north, which is hidden away in the Cheshire countryside.

Located an hour from Manchester and just minutes from Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail, the hut looks out onto gorgeous views of rolling hills. The hut’s secluded location offers guests the ultimate rural retreat which is truly off-grid.

Named Luna (all of Unplugged’s huts are named after dogs), the hut has huge panoramic windows - designed to let lots of natural light in - and a cool, Instagram-worthy interior with a minimalist design.

But even if you wanted to post a photo of your stay on social media, you won’t be able to. When guests arrive they’re asked to put their digital devices, including mobile phones, in a lockbox for the duration of their stay.

Instead guests are given an old-fashioned Nokia, complete with old-school Snake, a map of the local area and an instant camera with film. Inside the hut there’s books and board games to keep you occupied, and unsurprisingly there’s no wifi.

All stays at Unplugged are for three nights, which is the optimum amount of time to reap the benefits of a digital detox. Guests can experience improved sleep, better concentration and develop a healthier relationship with their devices following their detox.

The cabin is sustainably built, runs on solar power and is stocked with eco-friendly brands. The kitchen comes with everything you’d need including tea and coffee, crockery, fridge and a gas hob., while the bathroom has a hot shower and an eco-toilet. There’s a wood-fired stove which keeps the cabin cosy on a chilly night.

Outside the cabin there’s a fire pit and a grill, a picnic bench and wooden chairs, perfect for watching the sunset and sunrise (without posting it online of course). The stays start from £390 per cabin. For more details and how to book, click here.
