A four-year-old boy in northern Ethiopia had been having bouts of cramping stomach pain that kept returning. He also had a high fever, was eating less, and had an episode of diarrhea. Blood work showed anemia, with hemoglobin at 8.8 g/dL.
A contrast CT scan of his abdomen and pelvis pointed to something small and contained: a well-defined cystic lesion measuring roughly 3.3 by 2.7 centimeters, sitting next to the third portion of the duodenum. Surgeons opened his abdomen expecting to remove it.
