“In Portland, you can be yourself and then find other people that you fit in with,” storyteller Sarah Gilbert declares as we cycle through a covered car park surrounded by huge murals. Intricate Slavic babushka figures in a sunflower field sit beside comic-book-style dog portraits.
This car park was once a burnt-out building that attracted graffiti, but instead of chasing the artists away, Portland has made room for them. As Sarah cycles away, she shouts: “You don’t have to conform to belong.”
