'A big shock' as Indian restaurant in Radcliffe-on-Trent hit with 0-star hygiene rating

The owner of an Indian restaurant in Radcliffe-on-Trent 'could not believe' it when his curry house received a zero hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Officials carried out an inspection of Yaadgaar Tandoori Restaurant, in Shelford Road, on July 14 and said the takeaway required 'major improvements' for both food handling and management of food safety.

The restaurants owner, Mohammed Ashfaq, said that he "could not believe" that Yaadgaar received the low score, saying that the restaurant had been closed for the three days leading up to the inspection as he celebrated Eid. Mr Ashfaq, as well as assistant manager Kash Tahir, say they are confident of getting the rating back up following another inspection which they expect to take place in the next three months.

The restaurant has in business for 34 years and Mr Tahir said they had no received "a single complaint about their food" while he has worked there. Assistant manager Mr Tahir said: "Our boss always said 'if you wouldn't eat the food, don't serve it to the customer'.

"We challenge customers to come and look at the food, how we cook it at the restaurant and go anywhere in the restaurant and customers will say there is no problem whatsoever. We're not used to this kind of stuff - we've had four and five stars always.

"We don't want to lose our customers because we've been here for so long. I'm 100% confident (the rating will go back up). This is a big shock for me and a big shock for everybody because we've been working so long here."

Mr Ashfaq added: "I've been here for 34 years. The restaurant was shut for three days for Eid holiday. We had a cleaner in and asked him not to open the doors until we arrived to start for the day.

"I think the people may have been angered that they were not allowed in straight away I've got a very good reputation and now I don't know what to do, to be honest with you. There [weren't any] any mouse droppings [found] or anything that is bad for the food and we got a zero star. I could not believe that we got a zero."
