A 44-year-old woman checked into a hospital in Zhuzhou, in China's Hunan province, for what was supposed to be an uncomplicated procedure: removing a cervical band she no longer needed. She had no symptoms. Her physical examination was normal. Her pelvic ultrasound showed nothing unusual.
When surgeons went in laparoscopically, they found both cerclage bands sitting inside her rectum, coated in old fecal material.
