In 2011, a bridge made from recycled plastic crossed Scotland’s River Tweed near Edinburgh, offering an unusual alternative to conventional steel and timber construction. By Axion International, the 90-foot structure in the United States was divided into six sections and shipped across the Atlantic, assembled in Scotland. A year later, ASME reported that the bridge could be erected in just four days, the wider construction project taking less than two weeks. The project showed how recycled materials and prefabrication could be combined to create a full-sized road bridge while reducing the amount of work on site.
