A federal proclamation taking effect Tuesday allows an additional 300,000 metric tons of imported lean beef trimmings into the United States, and all of it must pass through the same port-of-entry inspection step that was missed on at least four shipments this summer.
The proclamation, titled Further Ensuring Affordable Beef for the American Consumer, was signed Aug. 26 and published in the Federal Register on Monday. It raises the calendar-year in-quota quantity by 300,000 metric tons, released in three tranches of 100,000 tons on a first-come, first-served basis. The first opens Sept. 1 and closes Sept. 30, the second runs through October, and the third opens Oct. 31 and stays open until the quota is filled or Nov. 30, whichever comes first. It covers lean beef trimmings only.
