Veterans and first-timers have packed the red carpet for the 95th Oscar Nominees Luncheon in Beverly Hills.

The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, serves as a meet-and-greet for each year's nominees — rubbing shoulders with other famous people and celebrating their nomination.

The 2023 lunch saw meetings between industry giants, a rainbow of beige outfits and the Academy admitting it mishandled Will Smith's infamous on-stage slap of Chris Rock during the 2022 ceremony.

As Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) president Janet Yang told attendees: "Today, you are all winners.

"We shall celebrate the power of entire film crews and the behind-the-scenes magic that make movies possible."

All nominees also took their all-important class picture together.

The 95th Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 12 (Monday, March 13 in Australia).

Spotted talking were Baz Luhrmann and Tom Cruise, as well as Cate Blanchett and Italian film director Alice Rohrwacher.

They're also given a reminder of the event's rules, with Ms Yang telling the crowd: "[When] you're asked to take the stage, you would do a great service to all awardees and the millions of people watching to abide by [one rule].

"It's the 45-second rule. As in, you win the coveted gold statue, your acceptance speech must be 45 seconds, tops."

"We've had a couple martial artists talk about doing a yoga action movie," Kwan said.

"It would be about a masseuse who massages people to de-escalate violence," Scheinert added.

Nominees are finally called up one by one to the stage for the "class photo".

According to those inside, the biggest applause when names were called out were the directors, cast and producer of Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is leading the Oscars pool with 11 nominations.

Oscars response to Will Smith slap 'unacceptable'

Ms Yang started off the luncheon by telling attendees the organisation didn't properly handle the "unprecedented" moment when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock during the 2022 awards ceremony.

The Academy launched a formal review of the incident, in which Smith strode on stage during the televised ceremony and struck Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's appearance.

At the 2023 luncheon, Ms Yang said the Oscars response was "inadequate".

"We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis you must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry," she said.

"You should and can expect no less from us going forward."
